Congratulations – you’ve had a baby!!
And now amongst the haze of feeding/changing/sleeping/repeat, you get to sit centre stage as you watch them develop into the most amazing person of their own.
So how do you know that your new perfect little human being is doing the right thing at the right time????Well the most important thing to remember is that YOUR child is completely unique and will tend to do things at their own pace. To help you get a gauge of what they should be doing, a set of guidelines known as developmental milestones have been suggested. While you have to remember these are guidelines only they do help to offer some insight into what you are observing in your baby today and to preview what you can look forward to in the coming months!
- A sneak preview…..
- Rolling over approx 4-6 months
- Sitting approx 6-8 months
- Crawling approx 8-10 months
- Cruising approx 10-12 months
- Walking anytime from 8-20 months!
Your health team
Although undeniably you are the person who knows your baby and their rate of development best, there are lots of people who are there to support you both along the way including your GP and your allocated Public Health Nurse who will see your child and document their progress at
- 3 months
- 7-9 months
- 18-24 months
- 3-4 years
- 4-5 years (in school)
What to do if concerns arise
“Failure” to meet a certain milestone within a particular time frame is often nothing to worry about and is just your child plotting their own path which they will be fiercely determined to follow without anyone else’s input thank you!
For example, one of my own children NEVER crawled and only started walking at 18 months – now the only time she is not running is when she’s asleep!!!
However if you or any of your health care team have any concerns then there is plenty we can do to help here at Compass Physio.
Within our clinics at Castlecomer, TullyAllen and Enfield we can offer you specialist paediatric (children’s) physiotherapy services with our expert Aoife McCarthy. With a wealth of knowledge from years of clinical experience in this field we will start by carrying out a detailed assessment and devise a tailor-made treatment plan for your child. This will include providing you with lots of ideas and tips to help your child along the way through their one special area of interest…..play!! We will of course continue to monitor their progress closely and will make sure to liaise closely with your already established health care team.
